Julie Swede

Julie Swede

After experiencing sexual abuse and physical violence as a child I became a runaway and was groomed into prostitution at the age of 14. I was put onto the streets of Southampton at 15 and was then trafficked around the south and south west in brothels, massage parlours, private flats and as an escort. I got away from my pimp at 17 but by then I was hooked on heroin so sold my body on the streets to pay for my habit until the age of 30. I experienced rape, sexual assault and physical violence whilst on the streets.

I am now in my 14th year heroin free and have not sold my body since I stopped using heroin. I have been volunteering for all that time and am now volunteering with One25 in Bristol and AVA-Against Violence and Abuse as an Expert by Experience on a couple of their DV projects in London. I am involved with Fiona Broadfoot’s and Harriet Wistrich’s DBS Disclosure Case and since meeting them have become confident enough to share my story and experiences of trying to exit the sex trade! I have recently spoken with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and spoke at the FiLiA international conference in Bradford as well as speaking to women’s groups and organisations across Bristol to try and implement change and to give a voice to the women/girls still caught in that lifestyle.
