Learning to use a solution-focussed approach
One of the biggest challenges for professionals is to get service users with complex problems ‘on board’ with making the changes necessary to move forward. Service users often lack confidence in themselves, are locked into unproductive relationships, and feel hopeless about life being any different. From this perspective, meetings with professionals often seem pointless, and the relationship can descend into a transactional one where the service user sees the professional as a route to free goods, housing or benefits.
Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a therapeutic approach which encourages service users to focus on the positive (their strengths and hopes), and to move on from a problematic past. It does not attempt to ‘unpick’ the individual’s problems, but focuses on where they would like to be in the future and what they would like to achieve. The SFBT approach has a toolbox of effective techniques which support long term, positive change.
In this two-day, CPD accredited, online training, participants will dive into the world of SFBT, gaining practical skills and insights to uplift their practice. This approach is suitable for working with both adults and children and young people.
Throughout the training, you will learn how to have meaningful conversations with clients, focusing on their strengths and future goals. By asking the right questions, you can help clients uncover their own solutions and feel empowered to make positive changes in their lives.
One of the core skills is discovering how to reframe problems into opportunities for personal growth. Instead of dwelling on what’s wrong, you learn to spotlight what’s right and how to amplify clients’ strengths to overcome challenges.
Setting goals and tracking progress is another key skill. You will explore how to collaborate with clients in setting achievable goals and celebrate each step forward that they take.
The training is not just about theory—it’s about practical application. You will get to practice your newfound skills in various counselling scenarios, from one-on-one sessions to group settings.
Overall, this training equips you with a toolbox full of effective techniques to help your clients thrive. It’s all about fostering resilience, igniting hope, and empowering clients to take charge of their own journey towards positive change.
“Ayse and Joe are professionals, but professionals with a heart, driven by passion and a sense for justice.”
