Professionals are increasingly working with people who have Personality Disorders (some diagnosed, some not), and who can find it hard to access support. Some service users may turn to alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism, which in turn can provide a further barrier in accessing services.
Personality disorders include Borderline Personality Disorder, Avoidant Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder and Paranoid Personality Disorder.
It can be difficult for professionals to know how to make sense of, cope with, and effectively support, the presentations they encounter. Personality disorder is a much used and poorly understood term. What does it actually mean? What might I encounter in someone with Personality Disorder diagnosis? How can I support someone with a personality disorder diagnosis to access relevant support? And what can I do that does or doesn’t help?
While some service users may have a diagnosis, others may be undiagnosed or awaiting assessment. This can be a further complicating factor for professionals.
This training will give an introduction to 11 personality disorders and diagnoses, along with guidelines about particular approaches which may be useful in each approach.
It will also introduce the Power Threat Meaning Framework, an alternative conceptualisation of mental distress.
We will learn from experts by experience and from evidence based approaches about what is helpful and what is unhelpful.
The training will conclude with a ‘problem clinic’ where participants can bring anonymised cases, challenges or questions.
“Felicity is an incredible trainer, so engaging and knowledgeable.”
“How professionals can have a relationship with someone who does not even want to be involved with them is one of the most difficult, important and yet under analysed dilemmas in social work.”
